Tips & Tricks
1. Winter Month Tip
Help extend the life of your wood by limiting the amount of salt that is tossed against the garage door jamb or other areas.

Salt Defibration, what we call in the industry as “salt kill” is the cause of many peeling areas. Defibration is a progressive form of deterioration. The attack starts on the wood surfaces and will progressively degrade all of the wood if the conditions are favorable. Salts can severely affect the strength and physical condition of the wood. Chemicals (such as salt) are dissolved in water and rapidly migrate into the porous structure of the wood. After the wood has absorbed the solutes evaporation carriers the salt to the wood surfaces, where they precipitate and accumulate in high concentrations. Chemical reactions that cause defibration of wood appear to involves a sequential degradation of hemicellulose and lignin. This attack causes a separation of wood cells at the middle regions. Here in Michigan, we have both wet and dry conditions and both extreme cold and hot conditions which adds to this problem. Once the salt is introduced in the wood, each time the wet cycle continues. Salt damaged wood will typically have a white staining and a fuzzy appearance. Bottom line, this means that this wood will not hold paint well.
2. Interior Cleaning of Fresh Paint
ALL paint takes 30-days to be 100% cured for that reason we recommend that you wait until AFTER 30-days before you clean any freshly painted wall.

The cleaning of all painted surfaces should be undertaken with care. Most coatings do not reach a full cure for a minimum of (2) two to (4) four weeks’ time. Prior to a full cure state, the coatings are not able to withstand the normal cleaning process.
Care should be used in the choice of products when the surfaces needs to be cleaned. Strong cleaners should be avoided, or diluted versions used to avoid harming the paint film. Also, note the abrasive content of the cleaner; to prevent a dulling or burnishing of the surface sheen.
Most manufacturers recommend a light soap solution as follows:
- 1-gallon warm clean water
- 1/2-1 teaspoon mild dishwasher liquid soap (no bleach added)
- Soft clean non-abrasive sponge
- Clean in a gentle circular motion, avoiding burnishing pressure
Please note we have noticed some commercial janitorial services have a tendency to use cleaners with high concentrations of bleach and other chlorinated cleaners. These cleaners can cause a very noticeable discoloration in the appearance of the paint film. This is very common in office building restrooms and even effects commercial grade wallcovering in the same manner.
In conclusion, a mild cleaner should always be used. If not sure, please test a small less noticeable spot to determine if the results are satisfactory.
3. Wood Replacement Tip
To protect the wood we always recommend that the boards be prep-primed on all six sides prior to installation.

This helps achieve a barrier coating which will not allow moisture penetration in or out of the wood. This promotes stability and prevents moisture from any source (including interior moisture) from penetrating the wood and causing paint failure. Properly primed wood will not be damaged by UV light. Most people are unaware that if exposed to direct sunlight for as little as two weeks unprimed wood will lose a significant amount of the hair-like lignin which allows a coating to adhere. Once this damage occurs, it cannot be corrected and the ability of the wood to “hold paint” will be significantly reduced for the lifetime of that wood.
